Home Page Description of the accident Prayer Schedule Latest News Message

Please Pray!  Andy's surgery on 06/27/2007 was a success.
Please continue to pray!

Lord Jesus!  You healed the paralytic by the power of just Your Word.   Only say the word!

Important Update
Elizabeth recently told me that whenever Andy hears of something good that has come from this tragedy it gives him hope, strength, and courage.  So, Elizabeth has made the following request (originally placed on the Pray For Andy Forums):

We have a request for you. If you have a story about a blessing or "miracle" in your own life because of our accident, please tell. Maybe your faith life has changed or a relationship healed. These stories inspire Andy, they help him to get thru the day and truly lift him up. They give him hope. We have heard some stories and would like to hear more. Thank you!!

In response to Elizabeth's request, I have opened a new topic on the Pray For Andy Forums called: Miracles and Blessings that have Come From This Tragedy.  Please post your Miracles, Blessings, and or Inspiring Stories to help Andy get through the day.

Important!  Andy's doctors have requested NO VISITORS at this time.

Elizabeth's Most Recent Update  (5/02/2008 3:14PM)

GOLF ANYONE?

(See All of Elizabeth's updates)

What a joyful day! Andy had a golf lesson with Jean (Recreational Therapist). He putted one-handed while holding on to his cane, then two-handed, grabbing the cane after the putt. Because of Andy's balance situation, his full swing has to be one-handed and possibly sitting. Jean told us that every public golf course in WI has to have a special golf cart for the handicapped. It's for one person, has an adjustable seat, and can be driven on the green. Andy was so happy he thought he might cry! Jean will take him out as soon as weather permits. In a way, Andy will have to learn how to golf again because he will have to use new technique- he's definitely up to the challenge!

Last week Toni (Occupational Therapist) came to Westwood to help us with Andy in the pool. She showed us so many things we had never considered, including deep water exercises to improve Andy's leg strength and to help Lefty to be more involved. He might even be able to get an aerobic workout- since he doesn't move too fast, this has been almost impossible. Toni is a total nut, so we are constantly laughing when she works with Andy. In the heat of summer, we hope to figure out how to get Andy into the lake so he can do his routine outside.

The last few weeks have felt flat. It may sound strange, but despite the new things Andy's been able to do, he doesn't feel like his body is changing. He has such a hard time with his left leg. It requires super human effort to get that leg to do anything. Then there's the paralysis- it just doesn't seem like things are changing in the feeling department. There is constant fatique and feeling nauseated- all part of this injury. Andy is so good at accepting and praying that God's will would be done in his life. He never loses faith or hope, but some days the burden just feels heavier. Spring has brought a new kind of torment- Andy loves working outside but can only sit and watch now. While the neighbors mow lawns and clean up their yards, Andy pines for yard work!! I will remember this when God heals him! Please pray for Andy to be hopeful, not discouraged. Pray for him to find joy in being outside supervising rather than actually doing the heavy work himself. We have to keep praying and believing that God will heal Andy in His own perfect time. Sometimes it's hard to be patient!!

Please pray in a special way for Andy in the next few weeks. He is preparing for the Medjugorje Conference at Notre Dame (Indiana) where he will speak about his life experiences of this last year. Please pray that he will be filled with the Holy Spirit and that God will speak through him. Andy so wants to glorify God in his talk. For info on the conference, go to http://www.queenofpeaceministries.com to view the brochure. Thank you for your prayers!!

'Meals for Meiers' Update: 06/14/2007
If you are interested in getting on the meal schedule to help the Meier Family, Please contact Kathy Coakley at (262) 966-9663 or please visit the Pray For Andy Forums. Kathy will give you a day to bring a meal to the Meier's.

In Lieu of Flowers
Also, Andy and Elizabeth have requested that, in lieu of flowers, people donate to a special fund (yet to be named) to help the hospital in Sarajevo. There is no room for flowers in Andy's room. He appreciates all the flowers that he has received thus far, but they are asking that people donate to the cause instead of sending gifts. Andy and Elizabeth want desperately to help the hospital in Sarajevo and to help those who were an integral part in saving Andy's life. (details are to follow as Andy & Elizabeth are still putting together the plan for this).

No Visitors Please
According to Elizabeth, Andy is very weak.  Anything requiring the slightest effort (even talking) completely drains him of his energy.  In light of this, the doctors have requested that his visitors be strictly limited to the immediate family. So, please, refrain from visiting Andy until we hear from Elizabeth that he is strong enough to receive visitors.  My wife Julie and I (who are close friends with Andy & Elizabeth) will not be visiting until Elizabeth says the time is right.  Elizabeth has explicitly requested that we all respect the Doctor's request.  However, you can leave Andy a message at the Pray For Andy Forums

Andy & Elizabeth are back!  Andy is at Froedtert Memorial Hospital.  The doctors are currently evaluating his situation.  Apparently, when one of the nurses at Froedtert asked Andy if it's OK to call him "Andy", he replied, "Either Andy or Dr. Love - whichever you prefer."  It's good to see that his humor is still in tact!

Andy will be undergoing surgery today (6/20/2007) -  so he desperately needs our prayers.

Both Andy & Elizabeth extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who is praying for them.  Elizabeth said that every time Andy hears of everybody's  love, prayers and support - he cries.  She said that he is especially touched when he hears of the good that is coming out of this tragedy - when he hears of people coming together in love and support during this very difficult time.  When Andy sees good things coming from this, he cries and thanks Jesus.  I am so proud of my friend!

Andy has specifically requested that we not only pray for him; but that we also pray for all of the pilgrims on the Pilgrimage.

According to Elizabeth, Andy is very weak.  Anything requiring the slightest effort (even talking) completely drains him of his energy.  In light of this, the doctors have requested that his visitors be strictly limited to the immediate family. Update  (Dr. John V. Jaskolski - Wed 06/20/2007)

I just spoke to Elizabeth.  Andy and Elizabeth are in deep need of our prayers at this instant.  The doctors have had Andy sit in a wheelchair.  Seeing Andy in a wheelchair brought home the impact that this accident will have on their lives.  Today, it's really hitting both Andy and Elizabeth.

Please pray right now for Andy & Elizabeth.

Lord Jesus, in your hour of great need, when you hung on the cross, your Heavenly Father gave you your mother - Mary - to comfort you.   Give Mary to Andy and Elizabeth - that she might comfort them the way she comforted you when you hung on the cross.

Praying for A Miracle! (Sun 06/17/2007)
     Dr. John V. Jaskolski

It's 7:15AM.  I just received a phone call from Elizabeth. She sounded very heavy-laden and down-trodden. It was clear from the tone of her voice that she is shouldering a very heavy burden. I wanted to go "through the phone" and give her a hug and tell her that we love her and that everything is going to be OK.

Elizabeth told me that Andy is awake and speaking; however he is in a great deal of pain. She said that Andy keeps saying to her, "Do you see Jesus?" When Elizabeth says that she does not, Andy tells her that he sees Jesus on a crucifix in his hospital room. But, when Elizabeth looks where Andy tells her he is seeing Jesus, she sees nothing.

Elizabeth said that Andy is astonished that she can't see Jesus. She said that Andy is on medication (and perhaps the medication is causing Andy to see this); but, Andy does seem lucid when saying that he is, indeed, seeing Jesus on the Cross in his hospital room.

Elizabeth also told me that she felt angry with Jesus and the Blessed Mother for allowing this to happen - especially given that they were on a pilgrimage to visit the Blessed Mother. (I told Elizabeth that I'd be angry with them too.) When she told Andy this, Andy became agitated and told her that, in fact, Jesus and Mary did not "cause" this accident. Rather, Jesus and Mary prevented the accident from being much worse than it could have been.

Elizabeth also told me that she knew why Andy was so severely injured. She said that moments before impact, Andy saw the oncoming truck. Rather than protect himself, Andy immediately stood up and walked forward to the next bus seat to protect their 4 year old son, Frankie. Andy huddled over Frankie to protect him - but in doing so, Andy exposed himself to the threat of greater injury. As a result, Andy was particularly vulnerable because he was "bracing to protect his son". The end result was that Frankie was kept safe - but Andy was not. (For the past 6 days, Andy's life has hung in the balance.) As of this moment, Andy has broken ribs, a broken face, a fractured skull, a broken back and severe pain throughout his entire body. Elizabeth said that Andy almost lost his own life in trying to save his son's life. I am reminded of what Jesus did for you and for me.

Elizabeth said that when she told Andy that she saw how he had been willing to give his own life for their son, Andy told her that it was "Jesus who saved Frankie". Elizabeth said that she felt that it was because of this selfless act of love that Andy's injuries were so severe.

Elizabeth said that she did go to Medjugorje. At the mass, she was asked to read one of the petitions. (She was asked to do a reading - but she felt that, if she did, she would break down crying; so, she did a petition instead.) Elizabeth's petition was as follows:

That Andy would be completely healed and that his suffering would bring many souls to Christ.

Elizabeth said that Andy is very lucky to be alive. His combination of injuries is literally the worst combination you can imagine. Several health care professionals have told Elizabeth that they thought that Andy wouldn't even make it through the first night. Elizabeth said she believes that our prayers are what helped keep Andy alive.

Elizabeth said that she is concerned that people might "stop praying" or might "forget to pray". Let's not let this happen. (See more below.)

Elizabeth said that Andy's doctor told her that, since they were on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, he thought that the best prayer would be the Rosary. Elizabeth specifically asked that we pray the Rosary for Andy. She also asked that we pray as a family for Andy.

Praying For A Miracle!  (Dr. John V. Jaskolski - Sun 06/17/2007)
I feel that the Holy Spirit is moving.

Here's why:

On the afternoon of June 11th, I was working at my computer when I got this sudden sense that I should stop working and pray for the pilgrims at Medjugorje. I had a sense that they had been in an accident. So, I stopped working and I said a prayer for them. The image of an accident was so strong in my mind's eye that I recall actually thinking to myself, "Wow, I'm glad Julie (my wife) and I didn't go on that trip because we could have been killed." (Julie and I were supposed to go with Andy and Elizabeth. In fact, they really pressed us to go - but we didn't feel that the time was right.) Anyway, I finished my prayer, went back to work, and forgot about it.

Two hours later, the phone rang. Elizabeth was on the other end. Immediately, my whole body began to tingle. (My wife had dropped Andy & Elizabeth off to leave for Medjugorje just 24 hours earlier - and I was surprised to hear from Elizabeth.) I said, "Elizabeth, why are you calling?" Elizabeth told me that they had been in a terrible accident...

- The Holy spirit was moving us to pray for the pilgrims - to pray for Andy - even before we "knew" about the accident.

Then came the tremendous outpouring of prayer, love and support for Andy & Elizabeth throughout the past 6 days. Masses are being said, Rosaries are being prayed, and Donations are being made. People are really coming together in love and support! People are really living the Gospel!

This morning, I woke up at 6:00AM. I was outside working for about half an hour when the thought occurred to me that I should go inside and grab the cordless phone because it might ring and wake up my wife and children. So, I went inside, grabbed the phone, walked outside, and within two seconds the phone - which was still in my hand - rang!  Elizabeth was on the other end calling to tell me all that I have reported above and to renew her request for prayer. This was the first call I had received from Elizabeth since we last talked 6 days earlier on the day of the accident on June 11th (both calls were unexpected). I would not have even heard the phone ring had I not walked inside and grabbed the phone just 60 seconds before she called!

These events give one reason to pause.

I believe the Holy Spirit is moving! I feel that God is preparing to do a mighty thing here! I think that God wants to work a miracle and He wants you and me to be a part of it.

Perhaps this miracle will be affiliated with Medjugorje in some way.

Here's how you can help the miracle come about. (In essence, what I am about to share with you is the message of Medjugorje.)

Let's step up our intercession for Andy. Let's take it to the next level. Let's agree to engage in the following:

Let's Pray, Fast, Do Penance, Undergo Conversion, and Bring Peace into our lives and into the world for the following two intentions:

For the complete (clearly miraculous) healing of Andy Meier.
For conversion: That every person on the planet would come to know the Love of God in their lives.

Let's seriously commit to this endeavor. I mean it. Think about exactly how you can commit to Prayer, Fasting, Penance, Conversion, and Peace.

Be specific (write it down).

Ask yourself:

When can I pray today?

How will I pray? (Here's how to pray the Rosary)
If you have never prayed before, don't know how to pray, don't believe in God or feel that prayer is a worthless waste of time, that's OK.  All you need do is say the following simple prayer every morning when you wake up and each evening when you go to bed:

Dear God, Please reveal yourself to me not as I think you are - but as you know yourself to be.

There are only two things necessary to pray this prayer successfully:
1.) Don't forget to pray it (memorize it right now) or (Print it and put it by your bedside)
2.) Watch and see what happens

What can I fast from today?
What penance can I engage in today?

The idea behind penance and fasting it that we are offering something to God out of Love. The analogy I like to think of is the following: Let's say I give my son, Joey $5 as a Birthday Gift. The next day, Joey comes to me and asks me if I have a dollar so he can get an ice cream. I say to him, "What happened to the $5 you just got for your Birthday yesterday?" Joey tells me that earlier that morning, he and mom saw a homeless person who asked them for a dollar. Mom said "No", grabbed Joey's hand, and proceeded to walk away briskly. Joey broke away from mom, ran back to the homeless person, reached his little hand into his pocket, and gave the homeless person his $5 that he got for his birthday.

Now, Joey doesn't have any money left for ice cream. So, what do I do?  I pick Joey up and hug him and kiss him and tell him how much I love him. At the ripe young age of 7 he has already figured out what life is really about. Now I give him $10 and say go get some ice cream.

I like to think that's how it is with God. God loves us perfectly - all the time - no matter what. But, when I engage in a selfless act of Love (which usually translates "sacrifice") - emptying myself of "me". I'm like Joey giving everything I have for somebody else. The heart of God is touched by this and He comes to me. He holds me. He loves me. (Just like I hold and love Joey.) He answers my prayer in the manner most appropriate in light of his eternal view of reality and "what makes most sense" in light of his eternal plan. And, although we are always one, somehow, I am closer to Him in those moments when I engage in these selfless acts of love.

Fasting or offering some penance for Andy's healing (or that others might come to know the love of God) is a way of offering something to God in Love with the inevitable outcome that God will hold you close, love you, hear your prayer, and answer you. It is impossible to out-do God's generosity.

Please - let's keep praying for Andy. Let's Pray, Fast, Do Penance, Undergo Conversion, Bring Peace into our lives asking God for a Miracle!

Lord Jesus, teach us to pray.

We have been informed by Elizabeth's mother that Andy is breathing successfully on his own. The doctors pulled him from his induced coma and he was able to communicate with Elizabeth! This is another miracle! Please continue to pray for his full recovery!

Lord Jesus, we thank you for each new breath Andy takes - as each is a gift from you! Thank You, Lord for hearing and answering our prayers!

Bosnia crash victim breaths on his own
By Tom Heinen

Doctors at a hospital in Sarajevo have taken Frank "Andy" Meier off a ventilator and he is breathing on his own.

It is another encouraging sign for members of the Waukesha County man's family as he continues his struggle to recover from a bus crash that injured many Wisconsin pilgrims on their way to the Catholic shrine at Medjugorje in southern Bosnia on Monday.

Meier's wife, Elizabeth, gave the update on his condition in a telephone call Friday from Bosnia to Dave Meier, a brother in Wisconsin. She also reported that donations collected at the shrine for the 27 injured pilgrims had come within about $4 of paying for all of the hospital expenses they have accumulated so far.

"Elizabeth said that they took Andy off the ventilator, and they brought her in and Andy touched her head like he normally does," Dave Meier said. "They were communicating. And Elizabeth was telling Andy that the Lutheran side of the Meier family was attending the Catholic Masses at Trinity (Trinity Academy in Pewaukee, where the Meiers' children are enrolled). And Andy...thought that was great.

"So, thanks to everyone that is praying and wishing the best for Andy and his family, because it certainly is working."

Towards the end of the day yesterday (06/13/2007), Andy's doctors called in a heart doctor because Andy's blood pressure was low. As of this morning (8:00AM CST), we are waiting for more news.

Lord Jesus, you know what it's like to have a broken heart. Your heart was broken for the sins of the world. Go to Andy. Heal his broken heart. Heal his broken body. Hold him in your heart.

Laptop Update: 06/14/2007

Thank you to all who offered a laptop and/or a cell phone. We have secured both a laptop and a cell phone and they are being sent to Elizabeth today. This will greatly facilitate communication with doctors and family here in the U.S. (Elizabeth and Andy could be in Kosevo for a month or longer.) Again, THANK YOU! Everyone for your kindness and generosity. Andy and Elizabeth truly appreciate the fact that everyone is thinking of them and praying for them.

Update: 06/14/2007 10:33 AM CST

We have some good news!

Andy is in critical but stable condition. The fact that he is classified as stable is wonderful. The doctors are letting him sleep (in an induced coma) for the next several days. They want his body to allocate all of its energy to healing and they feel that this can be best accomplished while sleeping in an induced coma.

Elizabeth sounds good, strong, and hopeful. (Thank you for your prayers yesterday! recall that we prayed for Elizabeth to have strength and courage.) She said that she is happy to sit by Andy's side and pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet. She tells him about all the things that people back home and around the world are doing for him. She said that she hopes that at some level he can hear this. (Andy is not awake - but we know that he is being aided by our prayers.)

Mike Jacobs will be conducting interviews that will be airing all day today on Today's TMJ4. So please tune in!

Please continue to pray hard!

Lord Jesus, every breath we draw - we draw from the fountain of your Divine Love and Mercy. Today, we are especially aware of the precious gift you are giving Andy with each new breath he takes.

Lord - Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Bus crash victims helped each other to safety in Bosnia

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Despite the shock of their bus plunging down a 40-foot ravine into a southern European river, the driver and 34 passengers, mostly from Wisconsin, pulled together to get everyone to safety, a family member said Tuesday.

Andy and Elizabeth thank everyone for their ongoing love, support and prayers. Thank you, also, to all of those who forwarded information regarding "good doctors" throughout Europe. Yesterday, an 11 page document was sent to Elizabeth via the U.S. Embassy. It provided a wealth of information that all of you helped assemble. THANK YOU!

As it turns out, there are several outstanding neurosurgeons right at the hospital that Andy is staying at. So, Andy is in good hands. In addition, Andy's condition is such that there is absolutely no way that he can be moved. So, Andy will be staying at the hospital he is currently at and he will not be moved.

There are three doctors here in the U.S. who are monitoring Andy's status and they have concurred that Andy is in a "State of the Art" facility and that Andy is in good hands.

Update: 06/13/2007 10:03 AM CST

Please pray for Elizabeth as well as Andy!

As you can imagine, this is a very trying time for Elizabeth. Right now, she is in deep need of our prayers. Let us all pray today and lift Elizabeth up asking God to give her strength and courage.

Lord Jesus, please bless Elizabeth. Grant her strength and courage. Send her the Angel who comforted you in Gethsemane to comfort her in this trial. Be with her, Lord.

Update: 06/13/2007 11:49 AM CST

Elizabeth has asked that we communicate the gravity of Andy's situation. Andy is hanging on to life by a thread. She said that he is literally living from "hour to hour". She has specifically requested that we pray for Andy to survive.

The doctors briefly took Andy out of his drug induced coma (and then put him back in). While out of his coma, Andy spoke to Elizabeth. He recognized Elizabeth and told her that she is still more beautiful than he is (even with her black eye). He gave Elizabeth a thumbs up. It is really still "touch & go", so please pray!

Lord Jesus, I pray for my friend Andy. Go to him now and be with him at this, his hour of great need. Look at him, Lord Jesus, and Love him. Stay with him Lord and hold him.

Update: 06/13/2007 1:10 PM CST

Per Elizabeth at 1:10pm, Andy does not have a CSF leak and does not need a neurosurgeon right now. She asked again that we pray for Andy to survive. Mike Jacobs from Today’s TMJ4 finished an interview with her and it will be shown at 5, 6 and 10pm today. Hydro-Flo Products, Inc. is taking care of getting her a cell phone.

Andy is suffering from paralysis. The doctor's do not think that it is reversible and he may never walk again. Andy is going in for surgery at 5:00AM CST.

Madeline and Frankie were released from the hospital; however, Madeline had to be re-admitted after she began throwing up. Please pray for her and for Andy.

Update: 06/12/2007 06:21 PM CST

Prior to going into surgery today, Andy could not feel or move his legs.

Andy was in Surgery for 5 hours today. The doctor made repairs to Andy's T1 Thoracic Vertebrate. The doctor pinned & rodded Andy's vertebrate together to protect Andy's spinal column. The doctor indicated that he could not see damage to the spinal cord but he cautioned that there still could be something wrong with Andy's spinal cord.

After repairing the vertebrate, the doctor moved on to work on Andy's head. Andy had two fractures to the frontal bones of the skull (A fracture to the bone at the top of the bridge to nose (between eyebrows). (These are areas of grave concern because they involve the brain space.) The doctor is also concerned because Andy may be leaking Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and they are not certain where the leaking is occurring.

After Andy's surgery his vital signs were weak and his status was described by Elizabeth as "touch & go".

*** Please do not stop praying for Andy ***.   Andy may be in even greater need of our prayers today than he was yesterday (the day of the accident).

Andy also has a great deal of bruising in the facial area.

Andy has several broken ribs making it very painful to breath. As a result, he has been intubated and sedated for comfort.

Andy cannot be transported to the U.S. while on a ventilator - however, he can travel within Europe (perhaps Germany).

Novena Prayer to Fr. John Hardon
It has been suggested that we pray a Novena Prayer to Fr. John Hardon with the following
INTENTION: For the complete healing of Andy Meier.

To that end, please begin saying the following prayer for nine consecutive mornings asking for Fr. John Hardon's intercession for the complete healing of Andy Meier.

Prayer for the Glorification of Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.

We thank you, O Lord! for having blessed your Church with the untiring service of your priest, John Hardon.

May he continue his mission and obtain for us the strength and the intelligence to proclaim and defend the truth with genuine fidelity to the Catholic Faith and the charity he drew from the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Grant us, we pray, the favors we ask through his intercession and raise him to the honors of the altar. Amen.

His Eminence Edourd Cardinal Gagnon, p.s.s.

INTENTION: For the complete healing of Andy Meier.
